Counting syllables

From the beginning of the word, count syllables (vowels) as odd or even. From the end of the word, count syllables as last, second-last, etc.

For example, in ęsadejęhęné:dahk 'you will prepare your fire', the even-numbered (sixth), second-last vowel is accented.

As the example shows, counting syllables (vowels) is relevant for knowing where to place an accent.
